Help scheme for digital TV switchover

man and boy
You can get help switching over

Early next year, everyone will have to switch to a digital TV service as the traditional TV signal will be turned off in the New Forest.

While this may not present a problem to some, others may find the switchover a daunting prospect. If you are aware of anybody who is elderly or vulnerable, please direct them to a dedicated help scheme which will guide them through.

The BBC Switchover Help Scheme provides everything necessary to change a TV set to digital.
Most people will be asked to pay £40, which will cover:
• Easy to use equipment to convert one set
• An approved installer to supply and install the necessary equipment
• A 12 month aftercare service including a free helpline However, the service is provided free for many people. For instance, those who receive pension credit income support, income-based jobseeker's allowance or income-related employment and support allowance may be eligible.

The free service will also be offered to people aged 75 or over, those who have lived in a care home for more than six months, those who are registered blind or partially sighted or people who get Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Attendance or Constant Attendance Allowance or Mobility Supplement.
If you are eligible, the Help Scheme will contact you directly in the next few months asking you to send back a completed reply form or respond on a free phone line.

The Help Scheme has been designed around the needs of older and disabled people. Equipment has been chosen to be easy to use, and contact centre, delivery staff and installers have all been trained to understand and respect older and disabled people. All installers are approved, carry identification and will never call without having made an appointment.
For further information on the Switchover Help Scheme visit helpscheme.co.uk or call 0800 40 85 900. Textphone users can call 0800 40 85 936.

Digital UK has launched an information campaign to provide support and advice around switchover, including a useful postcode checker which will tell people when they switch. Visit digitaluk.co.uk or call 08456 50 50 50
