Cyclists of all ages later enjoyed a fun event which included bike swaps, safety checks, group cycle rides, maintenance classes, a bike painting competition and a raffle, held in the school grounds.
The 'Cycle In', a celebration of safe cycling for local people, was a partnership event by NFDC, the Forestry Commission, New Forest National Park Authority, Sustrans, Hampshire County Council, New Forest Transition and the Brand New Forest Campaign.
NFDC Sustainable Initiatives Officer Paul Fulford said the day was a great success which sent out an important message to local people and visitors alike.
"Now that the new cycle route is open, people have a great alternative to using their cars for travelling to and from Southampton and the heart of the New Forest safely.
"The Hythe Ferry will bring cyclists over from the city and onto the new on and off road route. Likewise, forest-based cyclists can easily access the ferry to take them over to Southampton. It is a fantastic way of enjoying the delights of the New Forest while keeping fit and cutting down your carbon footprint."
The Brand New Forest's Enjoy and Exercise local programmes support cycling for all the benefits it brings. Paul added: "We hope many people will enjoy the new cycle route – and the many others in the New Forest – this summer. It's a great way to get healthy, reduce stress, save money and help the environment by putting fewer cars on the road."
